Type Locality and Naming

SE Tarim Basin. The Beiketan Fm was named by Feng Mingdao et al. in 1981. The type section is in Hongliuquan gully of Altun Mountains, Ruoqiang County, Xinjiang Weiwuerzhu Zizhiqu (Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region). It is the uppermost formation in Baxkorgan Gr.

Synonym: (贝克滩组)


Lithology and Thickness

The Beiketan Fm is the upper formational level unit of the Baxkorgan Gr. It consists of clastic-carbonate rock association, dominated by grey, dark-grey limestone, siliceous limestone, chert, inequigranular sandstone and siltstone. Lower part is dominated by limestone. Middle part consists of coarse sandstone and chert, intercalated with limestone and carbonaceous siltstone. Upper part is grey-green, purple red fine-grained sandstone. It is 468 m thick.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It is in conformable contact with underlying Hongliuquan Fm.

Upper contact

It is in unconformable contact with Muzisayi Fm (lower formation of Taxidahan Gr)

Regional extent

SE Tarim Basin. The formation is distributed at Hongliuquan gully-Beiketan area, Ruoqiang County at North Slope of Altun Mountais, Xinjiang.
